The Stone Frigate Big Band was founded in the fall of 1995 by members of HMCS UNICORN, Saskatoon's Naval Reserve Division. The band quickly grew to include members from outside UNICORN. Some of the founding members continue to play with the band.

So what's a "Stone Frigate"? "Stone Frigate" is the term used to describe British Naval shore establishments, and the nickname was adopted in Canada. The band takes its name from HMCS UNICORN, its original home and Saskatoon's Stone Frigate.

The Stone Frigate Big Band is supported by the Saskatchewan Band Association, Saskatchewan Lotteries, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture.
